Once the client accepts the proposal, Patrick J. Murphy & Associates can begin to design the new or restored instrument. The design documents for a new organ are sometimes different from those of an organ that is renovated, restored, or repaired. If we are building a new organ for you, the design will include:
- The stop list
- A diagram or drawing of the new console
- A list of the mechanical features
If we are restoring, renovating, or repairing the instrument, the design will include:
- The stop list
- A detailed list of the mechanical work to be done, focusing on the major issues
- A description of the desired results of the service

Whether for a new instrument or for a renovation, restoration, or repair, we will begin by consulting with the organist. We often find that the visual design and mechanical layout will evolve as we learn more about the space and placement of the instrument. Patrick will provide the primary visual and mechanical consultation during design. In close association with Patrick, we often use qualified organ design specialists and architects to contribute to the visual impact.
Design ends when the client has reviewed the materials and given the OK to create a contract. The contract includes many of the same contents as the proposal, but with more detail and formality. Special emphasis is paid to a description of the work to be completed, the revised schedule, and a detailed list of client expectations. Upon signing the contract, we will schedule production.
