Company Profile

Established in 1987, Patrick J. Murphy & Associates is one of the largest, full service, pipe organbuilders in the Northeast. Since then the primary goal of Patrick J. Murphy & Associates has been to professionally envision and construct new pipe organs and restore existing instruments that transcend the aesthetic and artistic vision of our clients in a personable, knowledgeable, and practical manner.

“From the very beginning of my career, I have been inspired and influenced by the legacy of American organbuilders, particularly those of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Through careful restoration, reconditioning and relocation of these organs, their sounds have left an indelible imprint on the Murphy tonal palette.” -Patrick J. Murphy.

Whether leading congregational singing, accompanying choirs or playing the organ literature, Murphy organs are characterized by choruses that are at once colorful and cohesive. The sounds of the past are evident in the work of the present, not through direct copying or imitation, but in a continuation of the spirit of the earlier work. There is both grandeur and liveliness to the sound, as if the pipes have waited for this very moment to sing their best songs. Bold registrations stir the spirit, while softer colors soothe the soul.

Located in Stowe, Pennsylvania, just 45 minutes west of Philadelphia, Patrick J. Murphy & Associates is comprised of a talented team of artists and craftsmen dedicated not only to the building of new instruments, but also to the rebuilding, restoration and routine maintenance and servicing of pipe organs of all styles and actions.

Our record is one of excellence in satisfying the liturgical, musical, aesthetic and pragmatic requirements of our clients who delight in the music and magnificence of pipe organs, old and new.

From our modern, fully equipped, 15,000 square foot workshop, we serve congregations, educational organizations and private individuals across the United States. We are constantly in search of new and exciting projects to which our experience and expertise can be applied for the creation, rebuilding or restoration of pipe organs to the glory of God and as a lasting legacy for those they serve.

We offer:

  • A full range of design and consulting services, specific to the needs of your congregation, focused on helping you identify all the available options, ranging from the custom design of a new instrument, to imaginative advice on tonal additions, console upgrades, relocation, refurbishment, or restoration of an existing instrument.
  • The highest standards of service and a commitment to quality combined with a depth of craftsmanship that only a Builder and Service Company combined can offer.
  • Consultations and survey visits to determine maintenance and tuning requirements, condition, and needed repairs.
  • Routine tuning, repairs, and maintenance on all types and sizes of pipe organs.

Our highly qualified staff brings to every project a depth of knowledge and experience in the fields of music, engineering, woodworking and the construction trades, comparable to any in the industry. This allows us to keep an organ project “in-house” from concept to completion, and offer pragmatic solutions to the sometimes conflicting requirements of an organ project.

Patrick J. Murphy & Associates is a proud member of the Associated Pipe Organ Builders of America (APOBA), with individual staff member affiliation with the American Institute of Organbuilders (AIO), the Organ Historical Society (OHS) and the American Guild of Organists (AGO).

A hallmark of our work is that we strive to listen to your goals, and work to resolve the wide spectrum of needs: visual and musical beauty, space and cost efficiency, reliability and value, to the satisfaction of everyone concerned. As with any project, clear direction begins with a good design. We welcome discussion, and strive to accommodate your desires, musical tastes and liturgical styles.

All instrument designs must allow for pipework, windchests, windlines, blowers, expression boxes, framing, casework, electrical relays, walkboards, internal passageways and ladders. These components are necessary for efficient pipe organ tuning and servicing of the instrument, thereby ensuring a long and useful life. Without taking these internal factors into account, the longevity and success of the instrument would be compromised.

We at Patrick J. Murphy & Associates believe we are uniquely qualified to provide whatever level of assistance you may be looking for in an organbuilder. We take great pride in our accomplishments and are continually interested in locating new and exciting projects. It pleases us to know that together we will create an instrument that supports your worship program to the glory of God for many future generations.
