Baltimore, MD Catholic Community of St. Ignatius – Baltimore, Maryland
Originally built in 1860 by the Boston firm of W.D.B. Simmons, this instrument was rebuilt and enlarged in the 1930’s to the mechanical standard of the times receiving new chests, console and re pitching while retaining the original casework. By 2007 the organ was once again in need of a major renovation to correct the mechanical and servicing issues from the previous rebuilding. After the instrument failed during the 2009 Christmas Eve service, this downtown Baltimore Jesuit congregation entrusted us with the comprehensive renovation of this noteworthy instrument.
The completely rebuilt instrument is comprised of 30 stops, 35 ranks, distributed over 3 manuals and installed within the original case. The room’s splendid acoustics add thrilling impact to the final result.
The completed renovation includes a completely new chassis and framing, our signature vertical drawknob movable console in Honduras mahogany; new Blackinton electric slider manual windchests; completely new winding, wiring and expression boxes that utilize our extremely effective shade blades.
Though most of the original 1860’s pipework is intact, it had been altered during the 1930’s rebuilding. Our challenge was to renovate the pipework so that the original 1860s spirit is recalled, while creating a musical palette for use within this grand edifice.
