Swarthmore, PA Lang Music Hall – Swarthmore College
Originally installed with mechanical key and electric stop actions, this instrument had suffered from reliability issues and was extremely difficult to access for service. As a result, the organ had only been used sporadically over the last 30 years.
In January 2020 the organ was completely dismantled and transported to our shop where work began. Once the chassis was partially set up in our erecting room, we were able to begin detailed assessments of the major mechanical needs.
WORK INCLUDED:
Slider Windchests
• Installed new electric pull down actions.
• Installed new chest tables, toeboards, sliders, slider seals, and rackboards. Only the grid, pallets and pallet box were left unaltered.
• Installed new electric slider motors.
• Releathered 2 unit offset windchests.
Console
• Installed new toggle touch keyboards.
• New stop action controls.
• New Peterson combination action.
Winding and miscellaneous
• Rebuilt all reservoirs.
• Redesigned winding system for improved serviceability.
• Structural improvements to the Swell box.
• Repaired and applied fresh paint to all of the casework.
Pipework
• All pipes were cleaned and received new, properly fitted stainless steel tuning collars, all mouth geometry corrected and speech checked for proper languid adjustment.
The pipes were then tested on the voicing jack.
• All reeds were disassembled, shallots and tongues polished, resonators repaired, reassembled and tested on the voicing jack.
The only significant tonal changes are:
• The Positive received the recomposed
Swell II-III Mixture.
• The Swell received new Mixture III – IV based at a lower pitch.
• 2’ Flautino, 4’ Gemshorn stops were provided on the Swell.
• 8’ Oboe to replacd the existing 4’ Clarion. There was originally no 8’ Swell reed.
